LaShell Renee
Known professionally as LaShell Griffin
A voice that helped shape the journey.
Before the tours and the stages, there was music at home. This spotlight begins with LaShell Renee, known to music audiences as LaShell Griffin—LG’s mother and a voice whose faith, strength, and soul remain part of his musical foundation.
LaShell Renee was the winner of Oprah Winfrey’s Pop Star Challenge in 2004. More than 15,000 people tried out, and only eight were chosen.
After winning, LaShell toured with Oprah on her four-city Hi Gorgeous Tour. She recorded her first album, Free, through Sony Epic Records, followed by her sophomore album, Dreams Are Possible, and Christmas CD, The Gift.
LaShell was the National Anthem Singer for the Detroit Pistons from 2012–2020, performing at both The Palace of Auburn Hills and Little Caesars Arena. She sang the National Anthem seven times for Barack Obama during his first campaign for the White House and performed several times for the Special Olympics.
She modeled and became a spokeswoman for Ashley Stewart’s clothing line. Her international performances include two visits to London, England, as well as Harare, Zimbabwe, Trinidad and Tobago, and appearances throughout the United States.
LaShell continues to serve on the Worship Arts Team at Life Church’s Southfield Campus.
She is a proud mother of five adult children, Mother In Love, and grandmother to 14 beautiful grandchildren.
Whenever you see LaShell, you will see her serving in the community, for it is her heart to always give.
LaShell Renee is Purpose Driven.
Her musical journey also includes opening for Anita Baker and Earth, Wind & Fire. After signing with Sony Epic Records, she joined a promotional tour with Ledisi and Lalah Hathaway—continuing to share her voice and connect with audiences along the way.
